23 Things for Research and the Engage: Social Media Michaelmas programme

I have been using social media from the start, to keep track of what my daughters are up to (Facebook), follow news or promote events on topics of interest (Twitter) or keep track of artistic friends new output (Tumblr). I started off very enthusiastic about blogs too, and I gave a talk about 'Blogs and Knowledge management in business' to the fellows at Templeton college back in 2003, to which the IT manager commented 'Oh blogs will never take off, - newsgroups are more useful' (would love to hear his thoughts on that now, 11 years down the line).

Social media is now used extensively in the library world, and I would like to learn from this term's programme, how to make full and better use of all the different tools, and investigate further how they interact and complement each other.

Redecorating the kitchen

The sun actually got out for a while this morning, while Pauline and I were in the middle of a long walk with the dog around Blenheim lake. But by the time we had got back home and had a cup of coffee, the black clouds were gathering again. So I had given myself a choice of either doing some sorting, seed collecting, cuttings gathering etc in the garden OR make making a start at stripping the old untidy wallpaper from our dining room ready for a fresh coat of (yellow?!) paint. Needless to say, I am doing the latter, while trying to catch up with old TV series on Watch Series (Mad men mostly ) - though broadband seems to be a bit patchy and is not streaming very steadily.

Start of vacation 2012

Back from two weeks of warmth in Cuba to almost constant rain in an early English summer. I am now into my summer vacation, finishing my weekend work in the Bodlain Law Library with the end of Trinity term, and awaiting the start of 2012-2013 academic year at the beginning of October. Lots to do over the summer: continue some interesting reading for Librivox, keep on top of the gardening - including collecting seeds and taking cuttings so I can hold to my promise-to-self of exchanging plants with friends and familyrather than buying them afresh each year; continue learning Spanish on Duolingo, as well as some decorating to brighten up the house.
